The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has deemed the ₱774-million pumping station in Tondo, Manila, useless due to its constant breakdowns since its completion in 2020.
Despite repeated repairs costing ₱94 million and proposals for an additional ₱200 million, the station remains non-operational and may even worsen flooding.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon ordered a third-party assessment to identify the exact defects and true repair costs.
He also criticized the lack of independent evaluation and urged better coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to avoid costly, ineffective fixes.
Dizon emphasized that public projects must not only be built and paid for but must also work effectively.
