DICT Secretary Henry Aguda backed a proposed House bill requiring major social media platforms to secure legislative franchises to operate in the Philippines.
He said the measure is important for public safety and service, citing the platforms’ wide reach and influence.
House Bill 4786, filed by Rep. David Suarez, seeks to classify covered platforms as public services of significant public consequence.
The proposal gained attention following the September 18 school shooting in South Cotabato involving online extremist networks.
Aguda also announced the lifting of the ban on Discord after the platform committed to closer coordination with Philippine authorities.
