A Philippine labor group, Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), is calling for stronger worker protections due to rising temperatures.
KMU is urging the government and employers to implement measures like extended breaks, temperature caps for workplaces, and access to cool water, especially for high-risk sectors like construction and agriculture.
While the Department of Labor and Employment issued an advisory in 2023 with some guidelines, KMU criticizes it for not covering informal workers and having a weak stance on mandatory breaks. The group also criticizes employers who resist these measures.
KMU highlights recommendations from the International Labour Organization (ILO) for governments to regulate workplace temperatures and employers to implement heat-reduction infrastructure.
