The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) is urging local government units (LGUs) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) to prepare elderly-focused services due to a rising senior population.
CPD-CAR Regional Director Cecile Basawil highlighted data showing the region’s aging population is already above the national average and expected to reach 7.2 percent by 2035.
With declining population growth and fewer young people, Basawil stressed the need for infrastructure adjustments like handrails to accommodate the elderly.
She also emphasized creating differentiated programs for vulnerable seniors and those still economically active.
Additionally, the region’s increasing average marrying age contributes to a shrinking youth population, underscoring the demographic shift.
