Quezon City 5th District Rep. Patrick Michael Vargas has hailed the approval of bills declaring January 6 as a special working holiday in honor of revolutionary figure Melchora Aquino, also known as Tandang Sora.
In a statement, Vargas expressed pride in Aquino’s heroism, particularly as she hailed from Novaliches, a district that played a crucial role in her contributions to the Philippine revolution.
Tandang Sora, despite her old age, helped the Katipuneros by providing food and nursing the wounded during the revolution.
Aquino’s birthplace, now within Quezon City, serves as a reminder of her sacrifices, and Vargas aims to pay tribute to women like her through House Bill No. 5850.
The declaration of her birthday as a holiday emphasizes her significant role in the country’s fight for independence.
