The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has expressed its support for holding a plebiscite to ratify proposed amendments to the 1987 Constitution simultaneously with the 2025 national and local elections.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia stated that conducting both events together could result in significant government savings amounting to billions of pesos, as opposed to holding a separate plebiscite, which would cost approximately P13 billion.
Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri revealed that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. prefers the plebiscite for Charter change (Cha-cha) to coincide with the 2025 elections.
Zubiri made this announcement following a private meeting between Marcos and senators, which took place after the ceremonial signing of two new laws on Monday morning.
Senate Resolution of Both Houses No. 6 was filed by Zubiri and two other senators, in response to the agreement reached among Senate and House leaders that the Senate will lead deliberations on the proposed amendments to the Constitution.
