COMELEC SEES POTENTIAL CLASH BETWEEN SIGNATURE VERIFICATION AND VOTER REGISTRATION

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Philippines has stated that it will not be able to conduct voter registration and the verification of signatures for a People’s Initiative petition simultaneously due to resource constraints.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia explained that while voter registration, set to begin in February, will not affect the count for a prospective petition, conducting signature verification alongside it will pose a challenge due to limited resources and manpower.

The Comelec plans to hold voter registration activities in public places like malls, which would mean that staff will not be available for signature verification.

The verification process will only take place once a petition is submitted and deemed sufficient by the commission.
