COMELEC EXEMPTS KEY DSWD AID PROGRAMS FROM ELECTION BAN

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has approved the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) request to exempt key social aid programs from the election spending ban, ensuring continued support for marginalized Filipinos.

Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian welcomed the decision, emphasizing that essential assistance such as medical and burial aid will continue despite the election period.

Under the ruling, programs like Ayuda sa Kapos ang Kita (AKAP), 4Ps, and Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) will temporarily halt cash disbursements from May 2 to 12, except for urgent cases.

Comelec also set safeguards to prevent political influence, barring candidates from aid distributions and requiring election officers as witnesses.

The DSWD assured full compliance with Comelec’s guidelines to maintain transparency and neutrality.
