Senate President Francis Escudero described Vice President Sara Duterte’s resignation from the Department of Education (DepEd) as “inevitable,” attributing it to political tensions within her family and allies.
He expressed respect for her decision and wished her success in her continuing role as vice president.
Duterte announced her resignation on Facebook, effective July 19, citing the need for a smooth transition.
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III emphasized the importance of appointing an education expert familiar with the sector’s challenges.
Various groups, including the Alliance of Concerned Teachers and Philippine Business for Education, called for the swift selection of a new DepEd secretary to ensure leadership continuity amid ongoing educational crises.
