CHINESE VESSEL GROUNDS NEAR PAGASA; PCG TO PROBE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will conduct a joint assessment with partner agencies to evaluate the environmental damage caused by a suspected Chinese Maritime Militia vessel that ran aground near Pagasa Island in the West Philippine Sea.

The vessel, which bore bow number 16838, was reportedly driven into Pagasa Reef 1 by rough seas and strong winds, and left after three hours without responding to PCG communication.

The PCG expressed alarm over the continued presence of Chinese vessels in ecologically sensitive areas, citing threats to both national sovereignty and marine biodiversity.

Environmental experts will soon assess coral reef damage and recommend possible rehabilitation efforts.

The PCG reiterated its dedication to safeguarding Philippine maritime territory and preserving the marine ecosystem.
