BATANG QUIAPO CRITICIZED FOR MISLEADING ELECTION LAW SCENE

Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal has urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to educate the producers of the TV series Batang Quiapo after a recent episode misrepresented election laws on premature campaigning.

The controversy arose after a scene aired on March 5 depicted a Manila mayor confronting a vice mayor over alleged premature campaigning, despite Comelec Chairman George Garcia previously stating that no law prohibits it.

Macalintal also pointed out the show’s excessive display of firearms, calling for compliance with election gun ban rules.

He emphasized that the series’ producers have a responsibility to ensure accurate information on election laws to avoid misleading the public.

The issue follows a recent incident on It’s Showtime, where a beauty pageant contestant admitted having little knowledge about the Comelec, prompting further calls for voter education.
