Education Secretary Sonny Angara welcomed Congress’ ratification of the Basic Education Voucher Assistance Act, saying it will strengthen government support for private schools.
The measure will institutionalize voucher subsidies from kindergarten to Grade 12 and expand assistance to qualified students from middle-income families.
It aims to ease overcrowding in public schools by allowing eligible students to enroll in participating private schools.
The bill will also unify existing private education assistance programs and establish a Bureau of Private Education within the Department of Education for oversight.
The expanded program is expected to cover more than 292,000 elementary students and nearly 18,000 private school teachers, with a proposed P4.34-billion budget for school year 2027–2028.
