Around 8,000 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators have opted to withdraw from the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), citing financial constraints and operational difficulties.
Transportation groups criticized the program’s requirements, including vehicle acquisition costs, as burdensome for small-scale operators.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) acknowledged the challenges and assured that adjustments are being made to address stakeholders’ concerns.
The PUVMP aims to modernize public transport by phasing out older units, but its implementation has faced strong opposition from the transport sectors.
Operators urged the government to provide better support to ensure a more inclusive and feasible transition.
