A tragic incident occurred in Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday night when an SUV drove into the “Lapu Lapu Day Block Party,” a Filipino celebration, killing several people and injuring others.
The crash happened near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street around 8 p.m., and the 30-year-old male driver has been taken into police custody.
The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver expressed its deep sympathies to the victims, while local officials, including Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and MP Harjit Sajjan, condemned the incident and offered their support to the Filipino community.
The event, which was winding down after a concert, turned chaotic when the vehicle drove through a pedestrian-only area, striking festivalgoers, including children, with some victims confirmed dead at the scene.
Before the crash, reports of racist attacks against Black performers had surfaced, leading the Filipino BC group to condemn the acts and reaffirm their commitment to inclusivity and solidarity at the event.
