Senator Erwin Tulfo has filed Senate Bill No. 1409 seeking to abolish the travel tax imposed on Filipinos leaving the country.
He argued that the levy limits citizens’ right to travel and contradicts the ASEAN Tourism Agreement signed by the Philippines in 2002.
Tulfo said the bill aims to make travel more equitable, accessible, and affordable for all Filipinos.
Currently, travel tax collections are divided among the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, the Commission on Higher Education, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
Tulfo added that removing the tax would improve the country’s tourism sector and give Filipinos a better opportunity to experience other cultures.
