TRADITIONAL GAMES CHAMPION INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ RIGHTS THROUGH SPORTS

The 2024 Indigenous Peoples (IP) Games Visayas leg concluded in Bago City, Negros Occidental, emphasizing the rights and wellness of indigenous communities. 

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chair Richard Bachmann highlighted that promoting the welfare of aspiring athletes from minority groups is a top priority for the PSC. 

The two-day event saw participation from around 300 competitors representing various IP communities across 17 local government units, engaging in ten traditional games, including spear-throwing and bamboo stilt racing. 

Bago City Mayor Nicholas Yulo expressed gratitude for the collaboration in promoting the rights of IP communities through sports. 

The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) noted that the IP Games serve as a platform to preserve cultural heritage and promote unity among diverse indigenous groups in the region.
