Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. assured farmers that the planned importation of 4,000 metric tons of onions will not harm local producers, as it remains below the estimated 7,000-ton deficit for February.
He explained that the move is necessary to prevent further price spikes, with red onion prices already rising from ₱110 to ₱170 per kilo.
Laurel emphasized that the importation is a limited, tactical measure to stabilize supply ahead of the main harvest season in March and April.
He also reiterated that his role as DA chief is to balance the needs of both consumers and farmers.
Meanwhile, four companies have been charged for allegedly smuggling agricultural products into the country.
