China has expressed concern over the Philippines’ collaboration with the United States to deploy a mid-range missile system on Philippine territory, warning that such actions could initiate an arms race in the region.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that the Typhon MRC missile system, capable of carrying conventional or nuclear payloads, is a strategic offensive weapon rather than a defensive one.
The Philippines, however, maintains that enhancing its defense capabilities is a sovereign right aimed at protecting national security and regional stability.
This development comes amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea, where both nations have overlapping territorial claims.
The United States continues to strengthen its military alliances in the Indo-Pacific, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.
