Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa is seeking temporary protection from the Senate as he faces the possibility of an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to the drug war.
Dela Rosa, who served as Philippine National Police (PNP) chief under former President Duterte, said he is prepared to face legal proceedings but hopes Senate President Francis Escudero will provide refuge if the ICC issues an arrest warrant.
He emphasized that the Senate’s protocol allows lawmakers to avoid arrest while Congress is in session, although the Senate is currently on recess until June.
Dela Rosa clarified he is not in hiding, mentioning he was campaigning in Surigao and Agusan.
His request for Senate protection is based on the constitutional privilege granted to lawmakers against arrest during a session, though his situation raises questions about its application during recess.
