Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada urged his colleagues to support Senate Bill 2871, also known as the “Chemical Weapons Prohibition Act,” which aims to ban the development, production, and use of chemical weapons.
Estrada emphasized the bill’s importance for making the Philippines fully compliant with the United Nations Convention on Chemical Weapons, ratified by the country in 1996.
He noted that while 128 of 193 countries have already enacted similar laws, the Philippines has yet to pass national legislation.
The bill seeks to regulate chemicals with both peaceful and military uses to prevent chemical terrorism.
Estrada assured that the bill wouldn’t burden the local chemical industry.
