SENATE PRIORITIZES KEY BILLS, INCLUDING BARANGAY ELECTION POSTPONEMENT

The Senate has prioritized the passage of four key bills before the session adjourns, including the postponement of barangay elections to 2029.

One major bill, Senate Bill 2816, seeks to extend the term of office for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to six years, with the next elections scheduled for May 2029.

This measure follows the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the 2023 barangay elections, which had previously been postponed.

Additionally, the Senate will pass bills for the modernization of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the amended Baguio City Charter, and pension adjustments for Department of Foreign Affairs employees.

Senate President Francis Escudero also plans to push for a government rightsizing law before the 19th Congress concludes.
