The Senate unanimously adopted Senate Resolution 256 condemning Chinese diplomats for hostile statements against Philippine officials defending the country’s sovereignty and maritime rights, after weeks of delay and heated debate.
The measure, sponsored by the majority bloc, stopped short of declaring any Chinese diplomat persona non grata, or subject to expulsion.
Debates flared between sponsor Sen. Francis Pangilinan and Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano over diplomatic conduct.
At the same time, Sen. Rodante Marcoleta reiterated his opposition and denied suggesting the surrender of the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG).
Senate leaders, Malacañang, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Philippine National Police firmly rejected any proposal to give up KIG, citing the Constitution, UNCLOS, the 2016 arbitral ruling, and recent maritime laws.
Analysts, meanwhile,e said Philippine-China relations are at a low point but noted recent efforts by both sides to reopen communication channels as a positive sign.
