House Speaker Martin Romualdez expressed support for funding to connect all public schools to the internet, emphasizing its importance for student development and poverty alleviation.
Currently, 78 percent of public schools are connected, but about 12,000 schools in remote areas still lack access, according to DICT Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda.
Romualdez highlighted that internet connectivity would empower students with the digital skills necessary for the future economy.
The 2026 National Expenditure Program includes P5 billion for the DICT’s Free Public Internet Access Program and P16.5 billion for the Department of Education’s Computerization Program.
The House has started deliberations on the proposed P6.793-trillion national budget for 2026.
