RICE SHIPMENT PERMIT REVOKED BEFORE ARRIVAL ON LAUREL’S ORDER – DA

The Department of Agriculture (DA) said Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. ordered the revocation of import permits for two rice shipments after receiving information about possible irregularities.

The shipments, carrying a total of 20,000 metric tons of rice worth around ₱700 million, were intercepted by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) after one vessel attempted to leave the Port of Davao without inspection.

Laurel said the permit for one shipment was canceled after the importer reported discrepancies in the rice variety and an expired delivery contract.

The BOC is planning to auction the seized rice, with proceeds to be held in escrow until the case is resolved.
