The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Korea Fire Institute officials discussed on Oct. 14 the proposed acquisition of 1,500 firetrucks from South Korea through a government-to-government arrangement.
The procurement aims to address gaps in the BFP’s nationwide fleet, including 1,115 of its 3,034 firetrucks that are already at least 20 years old.
Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the deal would reduce costs and prevent corruption by eliminating middlemen.
BFP Officer-in-Charge Chief Supt. Wilberto Rico Neil A. Kwan Tiu said the new units would improve firefighters’ safety and response capabilities, with training programs and future cooperation also discussed.
Remulla said the government aims to distribute the 1,500 new firetrucks to municipalities across the country within the next year and a half.
