Malacañang on Friday, October 24, urged the public to respect the Sandiganbayan’s acquittal of Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, his former aide Gigi Reyes, and businesswoman Janet Napoles in the pork barrel scam case.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized the separation of powers, saying the government had no role in influencing the court’s decision.
The acquittal comes amid renewed scrutiny of the country’s anti-corruption mechanisms following the alleged multibillion-peso DPWH kickback scheme.
Castro also commented on the controversy involving Senator Joel Villanueva, whose dismissal over a related scam was reportedly reversed in a “secret decision,” calling it a worrisome development.
Despite these issues, the Palace expressed confidence in Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla to investigate any irregularities.
