Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced his intention to apply for the position of Ombudsman, saying he would submit his application to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) before the July 4 deadline.
Remulla, who sits on the JBC as DOJ secretary, said President Marcos had been informed of his interest and that the council is best positioned to evaluate his qualifications.
The Ombudsman post, currently held by Samuel Martires until his July 27 retirement, has a fixed, nonrenewable seven-year term.
Remulla faces complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman over the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, but he maintains that there would be no conflict of interest if appointed.
Despite past health issues and ongoing controversy, Remulla said the Department of Justice is prepared for his potential departure.
