Court Administrator Raul Villanueva has been appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the newest associate justice of the Supreme Court, succeeding retired Justice Mario Lopez.
This marks Marcos Jr.’s first appointment to the country’s highest tribunal. Villanueva joins a bench largely composed of appointees from former President Rodrigo Duterte, with only two justices remaining from the Aquino administration.
Before his appointment, Villanueva served as court administrator, managing over 2,600 judges and 25,000 court staff nationwide.
He follows the path of previous court administrators like Midas Marquez and Presbitero Velasco Jr., who also rose to the high court.
