QC SOLON SEEKS LEGAL ACTION AGAINST FAKE NEWS PUBLISHERS

Quezon City 5th District Rep. Patrick Michael Vargas filed a cyber libel complaint with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against alleged fake social media pages posing as legitimate news outlets.

Vargas personally submitted the complaint and digital evidence to NBI Director Melvin Matibag on Friday, Oct. 16, at the agency’s headquarters in Pasay City.

He alleged that the pages were involved in a coordinated disinformation campaign on Facebook involving fabricated accusations and misleading AI-generated content.

The lawmaker said he would pursue all legal remedies to identify those behind the accounts and hold them accountable, with his legal team considering additional charges under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Matibag assured Vargas that the NBI would thoroughly investigate the case and identify the page administrators, content creators, and possible financial backers.
