Travelers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) are advised to wear facemasks due to a new virus spreading from Japan.
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has posted reminders for mask-wearing, hand sanitizing, and covering mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing.
Japan is experiencing an outbreak of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), a severe and rapidly progressing bacterial infection, with 977 cases reported as of June 2.
While the Department of Health (DoH) does not consider STSS a public health concern, it stresses the importance of public awareness and preventive measures.
Infectious disease specialist Rontgene Solante confirmed that the Philippines already has cases of STSS.
