The Philippine National Police (PNP) supports a proposed measure that would hold gun owners accountable for failing to properly secure their firearms, especially in homes with minors.
The proposal follows the Tacloban City school shooting, where improperly secured firearms were used, leaving three students dead and 20 others injured.
House Bill No. 10058 would require firearm owners to store guns in tamper-resistant safes or face civil liability and possible revocation of their licenses.
PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III said responsible gun ownership includes ensuring firearms are kept out of children’s reach.
He added that the PNP is ready to provide technical input to lawmakers as deliberations on the bill continue.
