PLANT BREEDING INNOVATIONS VITAL FOR NATIONAL FOOD STABILITY

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) highlights plant breeding as a vital tool for food security, rural development, and agricultural sustainability, according to Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.

He emphasized that improved crop varieties developed through plant breeding—combined with proper technology and management—can reduce hunger, increase farmers’ incomes, and build resilience against climate and economic shocks.

The Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, has developed over 200 crop varieties that contribute to the country’s agricultural advancement.

Solidum called for research that is solutions-oriented and inclusive, ensuring innovations reach the communities that need them most.

The DOST continues to support plant breeding research on key crops, aiming to sustain high-impact developments and bring new technologies to market.
