The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) is urging lawmakers to strengthen and expand the Blue Economy Act to protect the country’s coastal and marine resources while promoting sustainable growth.
PIDS highlighted that the proposed bills aim to integrate environmental protection, green technologies, and social equity into maritime governance aligned with the Philippine Development Plan and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The think tank recommended establishing a strong governing body with competent technical personnel to effectively coordinate blue economy initiatives across agencies and stakeholders.
PIDS also called for enhanced provisions on ecological integrity and waste management to address ocean pollution, noting the Philippines’ significant contribution to plastic pollution.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. supports the legislation, while senators continue efforts to advance the stalled Blue Economy Act for sustainable coastal and marine resource management.
