The Philippines retained its position as the world’s second-largest pineapple exporter for the 15th consecutive year, with shipments growing by nearly 3% in 2023, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The increase in exports was driven by heightened demand from China for the high-quality MD2 pineapple variety, which accounted for about 43% of total Philippine pineapple exports.
The FAO reported that the Philippines exported 600,000 metric tons of pineapples last year, with notable increases in exports to South Korea and Japan.
Fresh pineapples made up half of the total export volume, which reached 1.01 million metric tons valued at $731.94 million.
Despite the growth, Costa Rica remained the leading global pineapple exporter with 3.2 million metric tons shipped.
