The Department of National Defense (DND) condemned what it called the “dangerous and inhumane” actions of Chinese maritime forces against Filipino fishermen near Escoda (Sabina) Shoal over the weekend.
The Philippine Coast Guard reported that Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels used water cannons and aggressive blocking maneuvers against Filipino boats within the country’s exclusive economic zone, causing injuries to civilians.
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said such acts violate international obligations to protect human life and disregard the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
China, however, maintained its claim of “indisputable sovereignty” over the area and accused the Philippines of provocation, a position that has drawn criticism from Manila and its defense partners, including the United States, Japan, Australia, and Canada.
Teodoro rejected Beijing’s assertions as false and irresponsible, urging China to stop disinformation and actions that undermine regional peace and stability.
