The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) will discontinue its single period of confinement policy by the end of the month, following criticism from Sen. Bong Go.
The policy, which limited coverage for recurring illnesses within a specific timeframe, was deemed burdensome for patients, especially those with conditions like pneumonia and pregnancy complications.
During a Senate health committee hearing, Go highlighted the policy’s illogical nature and its negative impact on families, citing case studies of patients who were denied coverage or had to alter diagnoses to secure assistance.
One case involved a child repeatedly denied coverage for pneumonia, while another involved a patient with emphysema facing restricted coverage periods.
The policy’s removal is anticipated to ease the financial strain on patients and their families, improving access to necessary medical care.
