PCUP, MMDA COLLABORATE ON GUIDELINES FOR HUMANE TREATMENT OF VENDORS

The Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) announced that the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will review a proposed joint memorandum circular (JMC) aimed at addressing the treatment of illegal street vendors during clearing operations.

PCUP Commissioner Reynaldo Galupo discussed the proposal with MMDA officials, including General Manager Nicolas Torre III, Health, Public Safety, and Environmental Protection Office head Francisco Martinez, and Special Operations Group chief Gabriel Go.

The JMC, which outlines social safeguards for vendors, will be reviewed by the MMDA, with feedback expected to refine the approach.

Galupo emphasized the need for humane clearing operations and long-term solutions at the barangay and local government level, involving multi-agency collaboration.

Both agencies pledged to continue dialogue to balance public order and the protection of vulnerable street vendors.
