PCG TRACKS 20+ CHINESE VESSELS IN WEST PH SEA IN 2025

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported a surge in intrusions by Chinese research vessels in the West Philippine Sea this year, with an estimated 20 to 22 ships entering Philippine waters, three to four each month.

Commodore Jay Tarriela said recent sightings include vessels capable of deploying underwater drones, such as Xiang Yang Hong 05, which was driven out by a PCG aircraft after loitering near Guam and Cagayan for 22 days.

Unlike China’s coast guard and maritime militia, these research ships did not resist PCG efforts but may have retrieved equipment to avoid leaving evidence.

Other vessels recorded since February include Lan Hao 101, Song Hang, and Shenhai Yongshi.

The PCG views the increase in activity as an alarming development in China’s continued maritime incursions.
