President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the return of PHP60 billion in excess funds to PhilHealth to support the expansion of its services.
He announced during a visit to Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila, emphasizing that the funds will be used to improve healthcare coverage, not just to ease public concerns.
The Supreme Court had previously halted further transfers of PhilHealth funds to the national treasury, but PHP60 billion had already been moved before the order.
Finance Secretary Ralph Recto said the fund transfer was legal and used for critical health projects, without touching members’ contributions.
Marcos also highlighted the government’s commitment to accessible healthcare through the Zero Balance Billing policy, which eliminates out-of-pocket expenses for PhilHealth members in public hospitals.
