The local government of Palawan has voted unanimously in favor of a 50-year ban on new mining permits, a move that supporters argue cannot be overturned by the national government.
The decision, prompted by concerns over the environmental impacts of mining such as deforestation and displacement of Indigenous communities, has garnered significant backing from locals and environmental groups.
While existing mines will continue operations under specific conditions, the new ban also halts the renewal or expansion of mining licenses for 25 years.
Critics, including the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, argue the ban will hinder the country’s ability to tap into its growing mineral market, especially with rising global demand for minerals like nickel.
The decision now awaits the signature of the provincial governor, and the outcome could be affected by upcoming elections in May.
