Following recent deadly road crashes, President Marcos has ordered the Department of Transportation to study adopting the public utility vehicle (PUV) insurance system for private cars.
The Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (Altodap) is pushing for higher insurance coverage under the Compulsory Third Party Liability for private vehicle passengers.
Currently, PUV passengers receive up to ₱400,000 for death and ₱100,000 for injuries, while private car passengers share only ₱200,000 among all victims.
Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the move aims to provide additional protection for victims of road accidents and negligence.
Altodap cited recent accidents, such as the Katipunan flyover and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway crashes, where limited insurance payouts were divided among multiple victims’ families.
