President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. dismissed allegations that the appointment of the next ombudsman is tied to a plot to jail Vice President Sara Duterte and her allies ahead of the 2028 elections.
The claims came from Sen. Imee Marcos, who opposed Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla’s bid for the post, alleging it was part of a larger plan to weaken Duterte’s camp after failed moves to impeach her and amend the Constitution.
Marcos clarified in his podcast that the process is still ongoing and that the appointment will be based on recommendations and findings, not political motives.
Remulla is among the candidates for the ombudsman position.
Meanwhile, labor coalition Nagkaisa urged the immediate selection of an independent ombudsman to pursue corruption cases, including those involving lawmakers.
