The Philippines saw the entry of several foreign retail brands last year, including Italian luxury label Golden Goose, LA-based Alo, Pop Mart, and French patisserie Ladurée, reflecting confidence in the country’s growing consumer market.
Trade and retail officials said the influx of these brands signals strong household spending and creates jobs in retail, administration, and construction.
However, local retailers have raised concerns about being pushed to less prime locations as mall operators favor foreign brands, which drives up rental rates.
Economists have warned that the long-term dominance of foreign retailers could weaken the economy, as profits are repatriated abroad and the country becomes increasingly dependent on imported goods.
Experts and industry groups emphasized that supporting local brands should be part of the economic agenda to ensure a resilient and inclusive retail sector.
