The National Nutrition Council (NNC) has criticized the daily food budget of PHP 64, or approximately PHP 21.30 per meal, as inadequate for meeting recommended energy and nutrient needs.
NNC’s Bella Basalong stated that such a budget primarily covers basic carbohydrates but fails to provide a balanced diet, potentially leading to health issues and poor performance over time.
This response comes after NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan reported that the PHP 64 daily threshold is based on outdated pricing, failing to account for current inflation rates.
Basalong emphasized that the food basket used by NEDA needs updating to reflect current prices.
Senators have urged NEDA to revise the food threshold to better align with real-world costs and improve poverty assessments.
