President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed former Undersecretary Alexander Lopez as the new spokesman for the National Maritime Council (NMC), a body created to address territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea.
Lopez, a retired military officer and former AFP Western Command commander, will represent the NMC on maritime issues amid rising tensions with China.
The NMC, led by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, was established under Executive Order 57 to enhance the Philippines’ maritime security and public awareness.
The appointment follows recent aggressive actions by the China Coast Guard against a Filipino resupply mission in Ayungin Shoal.
Lopez brings extensive military and government experience, including roles with the Philippine Navy and the Department of Energy.
