Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has appointed Nazario Briguera, the spokesman for the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), as the information officer on maritime concerns in light of ongoing harassment by Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
In a special order, Laurel emphasized that Briguera would carry out this role alongside his regular duties.
Briguera reassured that BFAR will continue supporting Filipino fisherfolk near Bajo de Masinloc despite an incident in which the China Coast Guard used water cannons on BFAR ships during a routine resupply mission.
He affirmed the legitimacy of their operations, stating that the Philippine government does not need to seek permission from China for their activities in these waters.
Briguera highlighted the importance of the BFAR and Philippine Coast Guard’s presence in instilling confidence among local fishers and ensuring ongoing government support.
