A recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) found that nearly half of Filipino families perceive themselves as living in poverty. The survey, released on Wednesday, is a cause for concern as it sheds light on the growing economic struggles faced by many Filipinos.
The SWS estimated that 13.2 million families self-rated themselves as poor as of September, marking an increase of approximately 700,000 families compared to previous data. The self-poverty rate also increased to 48 percent in September, from 45 percent in June.
The report also highlights the changes in percentages among different categories. It states, “Compared to June 2023, the percentage of Poor families rose by 3 points from 45 percent, while Borderline families fell by 6 points from 33 percent, and Not Poor families rose by 3 points from 22 percent.”
These findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures and effective policies to address poverty and uplift the living conditions of the affected population.
The SWS survey serves as a wake-up call for policymakers, urging them to prioritize poverty alleviation initiatives and ensure that the necessary resources are allocated to support those in need.
By acknowledging and addressing the underlying causes of poverty, the government can work towards creating a more inclusive and prosperous society for all Filipinos.
