Ten passengers were injured on March 8 when an escalator malfunctioned at the MRT-3 Taft Avenue station.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that it would cover the medical expenses of the injured passengers and the insurance company would evaluate compensation for lost income.
After repairs by MRT-3 personnel and the Japanese maintenance provider Sumitomo Corp., the escalator was reopened on March 11.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon issued an apology to the affected passengers, while the incident highlighted the need for the privatization of the MRT-3.
The DOTr is seeking a new operator for the state-owned rail line as its concession with Metro Rail Transit Corp. is set to end this year, with Metro Pacific Investments Corp. among the companies proposing to take over operations.
