Meralco customers may see higher electricity rates in February due to increased generation and transmission charges, driven by peso depreciation and deferred reserve market payments.
Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga said the weaker peso raised costs from suppliers, most of which have dollar-denominated contracts.
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has also allowed the collection of transmission cost recoveries, adding at least P0.13 per kWh to bills.
However, a one-time refund of regulatory reset costs, equivalent to P0.23 per kWh, may help offset part of the increase.
Meralco will announce the official rate adjustment today.
