The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has issued safety guidelines for the public ahead of New Year festivities, emphasizing the importance of avoiding fire-causing pyrotechnics near electrical facilities and decorations.
Meralco Vice President Joe Zaldarriaga assured that the company’s crews will be on standby 24/7 to ensure uninterrupted service for its 8 million customers.
He also advised against using “octopus” connections, where multiple extension cords are plugged into each other, to prevent overloading circuits.
Customers are encouraged to unplug Christmas lights and other appliances when not in use and to inspect them for damages before reuse.
Additionally, Meralco recommends using light hangers instead of nails or staples to hang decorations, as improper installation can damage wires and create fire hazards.
